Education in the Savoy region.

Situated in a heterogeneous urban context, the site devoted to the school complex was highly restrictive, creating significant constraints. The opening on the street was relatively narrow, and the plot wedged in its environment, developing inwards in an L-shaped fashion.

Careful study of the program and the requirements of compactness dictated by this difficult site led us to propose a school complex which seamlessly includes in one building two schools, the gymnasium, and their associated facilities. Whilst taking this data into account, different implementation scenarios with the best potential to meet the program requirements were studied. The goal was to ultimately optimize the use of available space. An implantation mainly oriented towards landscaped areas was preferred. To reduce the visual impact of the gymnasium on neighboring houses and the noise pollution that would result from the use, we proposed to partially bury it. The ground floor, mainly occupied by classrooms or outdoor spaces, was further freed by placing the canteen on the first floor

The project is organized on two substantially equivalent levels. Accessible via Romagny Street, it stretches into the plot and folds east as to define two courtyards separated by the buildings. The main wing faces a pedestrian plaza bordered on the southwest by the teachers’ and public parking, the student drop-off area, and the gentle path meandering through the site.

The partially buried gymnasium is implanted on Romagny Street. The school restaurant is located on the second floor so as to benefit from direct deliveries from the street. The kindergarten school classes unfold to face the family gardens. The elementary school is essentially located on the upper floor. Both recreational centers possess direct access to the shared extracurricular facilities (catering, dormitories, library, workshops) without having to impede on the space reserved to education.

A genuine expandability between these two schools will allow them to answer to their ever-changing needs.
