The taming of a massive and outdated building by a lighter one

Classrooms, amphitheater, documentation and information center, offices.

One could speak here of a successful absorption of the existing building, rather than an extension. The architects chose to stand up to the severe concrete mass pierced by loop-holes by resisting it, then softening it. On one of the facades, the roughness of the old building is blurred by two additional massive sections, but more refined. Once this hierarchy established, the extension crosses the old building and answers with a differently graceful, peaceful and relaxing counter proposal. The incoming light (see views 3 and 4) and the light emitted by the new body of building (see view 2) play a decisive role in the approval of the location.

The new nursing school of University Hospital of Tours overcomes the shortcomings of the previous Training Institute of medical staff. The architecture is meant to be luminous; all rooms have floor to ceiling glass, the metal structure of the overall continues outside to ensure the holding of external venetian blinds necessary for the solar protection and preserving comfort in the summer.

Communications with existing services are operating the site by thin gateways that delicately isolate the school, highlighting its specificity and refinement.
